Non-defining Relative Clauses (Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định)
A. Khái niệm:
- Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định: bổ sung thông tin thêm, không cần thiết để xác định danh từ
- Có dấu phẩy (,) ngăn cách
- Có thể bỏ mệnh đề này mà câu vẫn có nghĩa
- Ex: My brother, who lives in Hanoi, is a teacher. (đã biết anh trai nào)
B. So sánh Defining vs Non-defining:
- Defining (Xác định):
- - Không có dấu phẩy
- - Cần thiết để xác định
- - Có thể dùng 'that'
- Ex: The student who studies hard will pass. (học sinh nào?)
- Non-defining (Không xác định):
- - Có dấu phẩy
- - Bổ sung thông tin
- - KHÔNG dùng 'that'
- Ex: My brother, who lives in Hanoi, is a teacher. (đã biết anh trai)
C. Đại từ quan hệ trong mệnh đề không xác định:
- who: người
- Ex: Mr. Smith, who is our teacher, is very kind.
- which: vật, động vật
- Ex: Ha Long Bay, which is in Vietnam, is beautiful.
- whose: sở hữu
- Ex: My friend, whose father is a doctor, lives here.
- where: nơi chốn
- Ex: London, where I was born, is a big city.
- when: thời gian
- Ex: Summer, when it's hot, is my favorite season.
D. Lưu ý quan trọng:
- KHÔNG dùng 'that' trong mệnh đề không xác định
- Sai: Ha Long Bay, that is in Vietnam, is beautiful. ✗
- Đúng: Ha Long Bay, which is in Vietnam, is beautiful. ✓
- KHÔNG thể bỏ đại từ quan hệ
- Sai: My brother, lives in Hanoi, is a teacher. ✗
- Đúng: My brother, who lives in Hanoi, is a teacher. ✓
- Luôn có dấu phẩy
- Trước mệnh đề: dấu phẩy mở (,)
- Sau mệnh đề (nếu câu chưa kết thúc): dấu phẩy đóng (,)
E. Ví dụ chi tiết:
- My mother, who is a teacher, loves reading.
- The Earth, which is our planet, needs protection.
- Vietnam, where I live, is a beautiful country.
- My friend, whose name is John, speaks English well.
- December, when it's cold, is the last month.
